Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
